Bay of Marennes-Oleron is an important French area of reproduction for sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. This area is often subjected to many pollutions due to anthropic activities, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which cause adverse effects in aquatic organisms. The harmful effects of such contaminants on fish immune system leading to a decreased resistance against pathogens begin to be described, but remain poorly known. In this context, influence of micropolluants, like PAH, on the defense mechanisms developed by sea bass was tested. Fish were exposed five days to a soluble fraction of PAH with environmental concentration (760 ng/L). At the end of the contamination, fish were transferred to non contaminated sea water and... |

Aneuploidy is the alteration of the normal diploid chromosome number. In the Pacifie oyster, Crassastrea gigas, hypodiploid cells have regularly been reported as have a negative correlation between this phenomenon and growth and evidence for a genetic basis. We previously demonstrated a positive relationship between a pollutant, atrazine, and aneuploidy in Crassastrea gigas adults and juveniles. To evaluate the persistence of this impact, the present study focused on a sample of the same juveniles previously exposed to different atrazine treatments (0.0 1 mg/l which represents a peak value found in a polluted environment and 0.1 mg/l) for three and a half months. Then, we evaluated them for aneuploidy after another two and a half months in non polluted... |

ABSTRACT This paper aims to gather and discuss important information about nonylphenol, such as physical chemistry properties, toxicity and analytical methods in various matrices. As a degradation product of ethoxylated alkylphenols, nonylphenol presents a higher degree of reactivity than its precursor. Due to its harmful effects on the environment, use and production of nonylphenol has been banned in European Union countries, alongside their precursors. The guide on quality of drinking water (USEPA) recommends a maximum concentration of 28 µg L-1 for fresh water. In Brazil, there is no clear legislation containing values of maximum concentration of nonylphenol. Due to this lack of regulation, a continuous monitoring is necessary of this pollutant in... |

The potential of three aquatic macrophytes, Azoll caroliniana, Salvinia minima and Lemna gibba, was evaluated in this work aimed at selection of plants to be used in remediation of environments contaminated by arsenic (As). The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse during six days in pots containing Hoagland solution (¼ ionic strength) at As concentrations of 0.5; 2.5 and 5.0 mg L-1. The three species showed greater As accumulation as the concentration of the metalloid in solution increased. However, a reduction was detected in fresh and dry mass gain when the plants were exposed to high As concentrations. The macrophytes showed differences in efficiency of removal of As in solution. A. caroliniana, S. minima and L. gibba accumulated, on average,... |

TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year). It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurements of 125Sb in seawater in the English Channel and the North Sea. Budgets of measured and simulated radionuclide quantities are balanced for theses seas. The correlation factor between individual measurements in seawater and calculation... |
